Chateau d'If - a fortress / castle for military purpose was built in the early 1500’s and is a three trier tall building with three towers. Within these towers are gun ports with open slots for defence from the sea. Located in the Bay of Marseille on the island of If approxiamately 1.6 kilometers offshore this fortress was never used in sea battle as perhaps its position and presence deterred any enemy invasion attemps. Prison – Given its location coupled with the ever dangerous sea waters and currents Chateau d'If the castle was turned into a prison. This escape proof encampment soon became the most feared prison in France and housed many who disrespected the authority of the day as well as religious and political opponents. Author Alexandre Dumas in his novel “The Count Of Monte Cristo” in 1844 used this island as a setting and Chateau d'If the castle / prison and island soon became famous world wide. Towards the end of the 19th century the castle ceased use as a prison and starting in the 1890’s it was used as a tourist attraction. The Artist:René QUILLIVIC - (1879–1969) a French engraver, artist and sculptor is best known for his war memorials. Many of his oil painting are displayed in galleries worldwide. His choice to make multi-part medals inspired many others to follow with the multi-part design.Medal:High Relief - Bronze - 70mm x 192 grams ( I believe This Is From The 1960’s )Medal Obverse: Prisoner seated in cell with small barred window, ring with chain cemented in wall and water container with bread. Inscribed “QUILLIVIC”Medal Reverse:Chateau d'If fortress castle / prison on island of If with ship on sea in the Bay of Marseille inscribed “CHATEAU D IF”.
